In the early 1960s, the lack of aged care facilities in the Derwent Valley inspired a group of courageous community minded volunteers to join together and raise £4,000 which allowed an old hospital to be renovated and Corumbene was established. Since then, Corumbene has grown into a not-for-profit, values based organisation with strong links to the community it serves, providing a range of integrated services that promote healthy aging and well-being within the community. Corumbene has expanded over time and now cares for communities within the Derwent Valley, Central Highlands, Southern Midlands, Greater Hobart and Brighton areas.
